When you compare television to other modern forms of communication such as newspapers, telephones or radio it is fairly recent invention.  There are many people alive today who can remember when television sets weren’t a ubiquitous household appliance.  It speaks volumes to the exponential speed of technological progress that we can now foresee the end of television as we know it.  Whether you love it or hate it, watch it a little or watch it a lot, television has been a touchstone of our age, a propagator and inventor of our popular culture.  What’s happening to it?   Why is it changing?  How will this affect us?  What’s at stake?  My thesis project will investigate these issues.
