Dr. Michael Geist is a law professor at the University of Ottawa where he holds the Canada Research Chair in Internet and E-commerce Law. He is a tireless advocate for media freedom and reform, and his prolific output on the subject is required reading for anyone in the field. He graciously agreed to appear in the film and his analysis of the future of television and media was superb. He also has great patience and stamina ... we shot his walk-and-talk in sub-zero weather with squalls of freezing rain.

Sites about the battle over Canada's "TV Tax". The cable companies are lobbying the CRTC to not make them pay for carrying over-the-air broadcasters. They say that it will simply be passed on to the consumer in higher montly bills, and would constitute a bailout. The broadcasters are lobbying for the opposite, claiming the cable companies are using their signals for free. The irony is that with the concentration of media ownership, some of the cable companies (for instance Bell) are owned by the same conglomerates who own the broadcasters (like CTV) ... both owned by BellGlobeMedia. In the end, the consumers will pay ... even though it was the big conglomerates who are in debt because they spent so much money buying up all the other companies before the recession, and because they rely on buying expensive American programming to remain profitable.

Robbie Rox has been an inspiration to me since I first snuck into a bar (underage) to see him perform, probably around the time his hit song "Pantission My Cushion" was getting airplay. I've always considered him to be Canada's louder and ruder version of Frank Zappa. Over the years we have worked on feature films together (he's a great actor, too) and I have cast him in many of my own projects. It was a pleasure and a privilege to have him perform acoustic numbers for this project's soundtrack. His insights into the kind of people you meet working in the industry were pure gold ... they will be an unforgettable part of the documentary. for more on his lengthy and distinguished career, go to these sites:
